"The sediment of the river provides data on the climate and geography of the ancient region," Jorge Figueiredo - of the University of Liverpool ocean and earth research department - said. "This study also has important implications in providing our understanding of South American geography as well as the evolution of marine life in the Amazon region and the Atlantic coast."
